| We literally did not have a square inch of spare space -- with THREE puppies and SIX adults (not counting two personal dogs and two cats) -- when we started receiving urgent emails on Huerro (we're going to call him "Hero" since we have no idea how to pronounce his name). He had been in a shelter for about a month with no interest from the public or rescue! We reached out to the shelter to see how much time Hero had but, unfortunately, it wasn't much. We had to either save him NOW or let him die. Not willing to do the latter, we reached out to our pull team at Husky Camp to check on their availability. Unfortunately, they were already on a rescue mission in another part of the state on Saturday, but were available on Sunday only. Would the shelter make an exception for this handsome boy and open on Sunday? You bet they would! The animal control officer at the shelter provided us with these notes on Hero: He was found as a stray and here is his play group notes:
UPDATE 9/24: Our friends from Husky Camp pulled Hero from the shelter this afternoon. He is safe and will be enjoying the hospitality of Husky Camp until we have room for him here in Phoenix, which may be a while. At least we know he is safe and being well taken care of.
UPDATE 11/19: Hero has arrived in Phoenix! Thanks to our friends at Husky Camp, who transported him from California to Quartzsite, AZ, and to volunteer Wendy, Hero has made his way to Phoenix in search of her forever home.
UPDATE 12/5: We tried Hero out on some "fetch" this morning. He definitely kept his eye on the ball and was more than willing to chase it across the yard, time and time again. But, bring it back was definitely not in his wheelhouse! He's such a clown.
This is one big, good looking boy! He does need to add a few pounds to his large frame, but we should be able to take care of that in no time. He seems friendly with the other dogs. No cats! Since he is so large, we would suggest someone with GSD experience (or lots of muscles). He's a big sweetheart, though. Just needs some manners. Adoption fee $365.00.

He was standing in the rear of the kennel with soft eyes, low tail and stiff body as the runner approached. The runner coaxed him while kneeling at the gate. He approached with a low tail wag and soft eyes. He jumped on the gate and licked the runner's hand with soft eyes. The runner opened the gate and he play bowed as the loop leash was presented. The runner easily placed the loop leash over his head. He walked well, next to the runner, on the way to the catch pen. He entered the pen and walked up to the play yard fence to greet a male husky. He had soft eyes and a neutral tail wag. He remained loose as the runner easily clasped the collar around his neck. He entered the play yard and began to explore. A female husky came up and sniffed his body as he walked the perimeter. He did not acknowledge her for a few moments. She came up to his face and he stopped to greet her. He had soft eyes, alert ears and a high tail wag. He then kicked his feet and walked away from her. The male shepherd came up to him at this time. He tolerated the husky sniffing his body with soft eyes and stiff tail. He kicked his feet out while scratching the ground once again and walked away. He approached a handler with soft eyes and low tail wag to briefly solicit affection. He then walked away to resume exploring. An energetic male Shar Pei came up and obnoxiously lingered in his face. He became tense with a high stiff tail and backed away from the Shar Pei, not comfortable with his energy. After a few moments the Shar Pei came back up to him. He was slightly more relaxed with the higher energy as he tolerated a longer greeting but remained tense with a low tail. He did not display any play style while in the yard. We have staff and volunteers that would love to see him get adopted or rescued!
