|This (above) is how we first saw Wiley. Locked in a cage in a California kill shelter, but still happy as a clam and asking for attention from anyone who walked by. What a guy! There was no way we were going to let a temperament like that be destroyed ... and then we heard his story. He was an owner surrender because he had allegedly killed a BIRD! A bird! (OK, it was a peacock, and not to be insensitive, but it's a bird!) We don't know the cirumstances, but it almost cost him his life. The shelter was going to immediately euthanize him and not even give him a chance at adoption.
According to Alyssa (with Wiley at right & left): "I also wanted to let you know, I do not believe Wiley killed the peacock. Nor did the officer that showed up at the scene to pick him up. He said Wiley was locked in the coop with the dead birds, but had no blood on him. And on the way out, walked him past geese with absolutely no reaction.
He [the animal control officer] said it seemed like Wiley had been set up and put into the coop after the fact. There was another dog on the property that the owners had locked in their house and would not allow animal control to see. The assumption was the dog inside was probably the one that actually got the birds."
Our thanks go out to Lisa K who did not stop advocating for this boy, even thought he literally had hours to live. Thanks to Alyssa for the pull, Tera for the transport to Crossroads and, of course, our Facebook angel Kathy J who set the whole rescue in motion.
Wiley will be on the transport on Saturday in search of his forever home. We won't know if the owner provided any information on Wiley until we receive his shelter paperwork, so please check back.
UPDATE 4/13: After a week's delay, Wiley has arrived in Phoenix!
UPDATE 4/17: Wiley visited Soldier's Best Friend today for an evaluation for his suitability as a companion for one of our military veterans ~ and passed with flying colors!!
