QUEEN

Queen is a special dog with some special needs. She's out of West German working lines and was groomed to compete in Shutzhund. She has OFA EXCELLENT hips and OFA certified normal elbows. She's compactly built at around 66 lbs.

Queen's ability to pursue a Schutzhund title has been hampered by her doctor's orders not to do tracking. Oh she can track all right, but she has been treated for Valley Fever and presented in an unusual manner: She had some lesions and swelling in her legs. When tested, she was negative for Valley Fever (not all that unusual). When tested later a 2nd time, she showed a titer of 1:2 which is typically associated with a previous exposure or an infection that the immune system successfully fought. Her 3rd test produced yet another negative as did her last and 4th. It was not until slides of the leg lesions were done that she was given a VF diagnosis (only one or two spores were found on the slides) and treated accordingly. She has been negative ever since, however, it is believed that she came into contact with an area of soil heavy with spores at a time when her immune system was compromised.

Which brings us to her other special need: Queen has IBD (Canine Inflammatory Bowel Disease)...the lymphocytic-plasmacytic type...which results in chronically loose stool. After much experimentation with meds and food, she has been symptom free for about 4 and half months. She's on a prescription Kangaroo & Oatmeal diet and long term antibiotics. While the latter might not be an ideal scenario, her owner ascribes to the theory, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Her Mom works for a Veterinary hospital so Queen has had every diagnostic test known to man including exploratory surgery in order to arrive at her definitive diagnosis. Nevertheless, Queen is gradually being weaned off her medications to see how she does.

Queen is a high strung gal yet she is a calm house dog, content to munch (and how she loves to munch) and lay at your feet. But when it comes to doing her obedience and protection work, she's a dynamo. She truly possesses that much desired "on and off " switch. Since Queen was kept very quiet for an extended period of time while recovering, she didn't get much in the way of satisfying her need to be busy. We think that with consistent and regular exercise, her need to chew will quickly diminish.

She is currently at the BH level of obedience..one roughly similar to the AKC CD (Companion Dog) title and has completed her AD (a 12+ mile endurance run). She's almost ready to resume her more advanced obedience and protection work.

Queen is classically aloof but fine with strangers, very loyal to her person and will work tirelessly for the person with whom she bonds. She would do best in an adult home with someone who has GSD and handling experience. She will need the usual ample time to keep her active. She has not had any real exposure to cats, however, her prey drive IS above average.

This young gal will require a grass yard..no loose dirt and someone who can accommodate her medical needs. She does OK with other dogs (she was raised with a Dachshund, Whippet and a few GSDs) no problems, but prefers the company of her human. She also lives with a toddler, however, we would rather there be no children in her new home so that she gets all of the attention she needs and deserves.

Queen turned only two years old on August 11, 2007. She's had a rough start and is due for a new one. This handsome sable import is house trained, crate trained, vaccinated, chipped, spayed, papered and ready to move on.

UPDATE: We still have not had an opportunity for our own, hands-on evaluation as Queen's Mom has been doing some traveling. We expect to see her early in June and will update her info then. She has also been taken off her antibiotics and will soon be off of her anti-fungal meds. If she does well without medications her only special need will be her diet..pretty easy. Please check back.

Adoption fee $195.00.
