|Once again, our facebook angel, Kathy J, found another white furbaby in need. Maddox is only six months old and was listed as "RESCUE ONLY" because of what the shelter was saying was an "wound on left shoulder and right foreleg limp." We asked our friends at Crossroads if they could go to the shelter and meet Maddox, and as we were on the phone with the shelter Monday morning requesting that they NOT kill this boy, our friends arrived at the shelter to meet Maddox. Just a few minutes later, Maddox was out of the shelter ~ FREE!!!
Maddox enjoyed his ride to freedom.
A short while later we received the photos of Maddox's injury, and we were shocked.
Maddox will be seeing a vet ASAP to determine the cause of his injuries and get him on the road to treatment as quickly as we can. We cannot even imagine how a 6 month old puppy could have sustained injuries like these ... or can we?
UPDATE 11/5: Thanks to our friends Chuck & Jon from Husky Camp Rescue in California, Sheena and Maddox arrived safe and sound in Phoenix this afternoon.
In a word, Maddox is a PUPPY. He's sweet and bold and ready for mischief -- he's also ready to begin training because he has none. He's good with other dogs and people, but may be too much for a small dog and/or small children. He simply doesn't know how big he is.
Now to address Maddox' wounds:
We don't know how long what we're seeing now has been healing. The shelter shaved some of the wounds, but not all of them, probably because there was too much debris and fluid trapped in his coat, but we can't be sure. Everything appears clean and healing, and Maddox has been on antibiotics since we pulled him. He has an appointment with our vet on Wednesday, and maybe there we can finally get some answers.
UPDATE 11/8: Maddox saw the vet today for his intake exam and neuter. The areas still showing "damage" were shaved and found to be smooth, clean and healing underneath the matted fur. The skin is pink and healthy, and Maddox should be good as new in no time. He will be kept on antibiotics to ensure that everything heals completely.
As for what caused this massive injury, it's still a mystery. The vet's best guess is a possible staff infection that was left untreated to spread at will. But, that's in the past for Maddox who is now neutered, up-to-date on shots, microchipped and will soon be ready to start the rest of his life with a forever family.
UPDATE 11/8 P.M.: Maddox is now home and safely tucked in at his temporary foster home. His sides have been shaved to double check his injuries and give them a better chance to heal. His skin scraping was negative, and his neuter went off without a hitch. He's a very happy boy to be home! His skin will continue to heal, and his hair will start filling back in now that he's getting the proper care and nutrition.
