|Luca was brought to our attention in late February by an unidentified Facebook poster (we get a lot of them), after he was dumped at a high kill shelter by his family. They were moving -- we're supposing to one of those states that doesn't allow dogs. Search as we might, we couldn't find a single, solitary state in the continental United States that didn't allow dogs ... we'll keep looking.
Not understanding what had happened to him, Luca waited patiently in his kennel for his family to return for him. No one had the heart to tell him that, not only was his family NOT coming back, but because he was an owner surrender and was now getting sick (the inevitable kennel cough), he had been labeled "RESCUE ONLY" and given 72 hours to live. According to insiders, this shelter is notorious for labeling German shepherds "RESCUE ONLY" due to behavior and putting them on the fast track to euthanasia. Not to mention the shelter is currently under rennovation and low on space.
Even though we were not looking to take in any new dogs, we couldn't look at Luca and allow humans to let him down. We reached our to our Facebook angel, Kathy J, who immediately got to work. The first piece of information that Kathy received was from a shelter volunteer who worked with the shepherds. Her assessment of Luca was, "Good dog."
Our thanks go out to Lisa, who sent Tina to do the pull and transport to Crossroads. While she was picking up Luca at the shelter, Tina ran into the BP volunteer shepherd person, and she was so excited that Luca made it out!
Per Tina, “He’s bigger than I thought he was! He was a little stressed but still sweet. He was kennel protective, but when he realized he was leaving, that stopped.”
UPDATE 2/28: As of this evening, Luca is out of the shelter and safe in the care of Cathleen and Joe at Crossroads. He will be given some time to decompress, after which neuter surgery will be scheduled, along with transport to Phoenix.
UPDATE: Luca was neutered this past week and will be making his way to Phoenix via transport on March 17th -- St. Patrick's Day!
UPDATE 3/17: Luca has arrived in Phoenix.
This boy is completely bewildered at the turn his life has taken. He's not sure who to trust or which way to go. According to Cathleen at Crossroads, "He's a happy boy." But we have not seen that just yet. He definitely does not like being crated (we bribed him with his dinner), but once inside is content to lie down and relax.
We're hoping over the next few days he gets comfortable and can start showing us the fun, loving side of himself. He's such a sweet boy.
UPDATE 3/20: In a surprising turn of events, we received an email today, "I am/was Luca's next door neighbor. I've known him since a puppy and have had him over to my house dozens of times mostly to play with my daughters' dogs when they come over. I don't know why this guy didn't tell me that he was getting rid of Luca because I would of taken him. I played with him over my fence every day, literally, and i miss him. Please let me know if I can adopt him."
Luca is neutered, UTD on shots and microchipped. He'd love a forever family to call his own.
Adoption fee $375.00.
