JAEGER (pronounced "YAY' - grrrr)

Jaeger is an AKC registered (DOB 2-13-08) male white German Shepherd Dog. He has been in the same loving family since approximately 12 weeks of age (after being adopted from our rescue as a puppy), but unfortunately that family is breaking up. It was agreed that one adult would keep the family's female GSD, and the other adult would keep Jaeger, but apparently the "other adult" has decided that he doesn't want to be an adult and step up for Jaeger, and so this boy finds himself needing a place to go ASAP as he is currently being left in the yard in a vacant home by himself.

We will have a more updated list of Jaeger's likes and dislikes, training level, etc. as well as current photos shortly. What we do know is that he is a headstrong youngster who will require just as headstrong a pack leader. He does well with female dogs; however, he is a very large puppy that must be taught his manners and boundaries.

We are desperately seeking a foster or foster to adopt situation for Jaeger so we can get him out of the yard and back into a home. He is housetrained to a doggie door, but is still a puppy and cannot be left for long periods of time unsupervised. Ongoing training and socialization is a MUST for this deserving youngster.

What we have been told about Jaeger:

  • Positives:
    - He loves attention
    - He knows how to sit and give paw
    - He loves to cuddle
    - He loves to have his feet touched/massaged
    - When the alarm goes off, he will also reinforce the alarm by licking you trying to get you - up out of bed.
    - He gets along great with other dogs and now will only eat the food out of his own dish
    - He allows you to pet him while he is eating (not aggressive with his food)
    - He is still learning not to pull while walking on a leash but has gotten much better when using the pinch collar
    - He takes food from your hand gently (this is something that we worked on)
    - He is house trained using a doggy door
    - He still needs to be penned up during the day but when you are home with him he can have free roam of the house and won't do damage to anything in the house while you are home (I'm talking about the puppy chewing)
    - He loves getting new toys and will always play with the toys that you give him
    - He enjoys playing fetch
    - He loves getting brushed
    - He loves getting his teeth brushed
    - He does a great job at the groomers
    - He does great at the vet's office
    - He is loveable
    - He loves to play
    - He will stay by your side the entire time that you are home with him
    - He never gives a hard time going in the pen (as a matter of fact, he knows my routine and when I put my shoes on he takes himself into the pen without me even asking him to go...he's awesome)
  • Negatives:
    - He still tries to jump on you
    - He thinks he is still a puppy lap dog and will try to lay on top of you (this can be bad if there is a little kid in the house)
    - He still likes biting (he does this to play or get attention not to be aggressive but it can hurt a child)....still working on this
    - He can be too protective - if a stranger is walking by you, comes to the door, or if you go to talk to someone...he tries to pull and growl towards that person (He has never bitten anyone but I don't let him get that close)
    - He tries to get everywhere before you and if you are walking down the hallway for example, he will push you out of the way to get there first (he's a big boy)
    - He doesn't like little kids jumping around him (he will bark and nibble at them...kind of like nipping)

UPDATE 3/17: Jaeger will be moving in with his foster mom tomorrow. As far as an adoptive home is concerned, someone with prior GSD experience and who is not gone from the house all day would be ideal for this deserving young boy. He still has a lot of learning and socializing to do.

UPDATE 3/19: Jaeger is adjusting beautifully to his foster home with one of our staff members. He enjoys playtime with the other female shepherds in the household, and crates up without any problem at all when it's time for the other boys to go out. He's quiet and calm in his crate and has been no trouble at all. His foster mom has decided that he can stick around until an adoptive home can be found for him so that his next move will be his last.

UPDATE 5/4: We've had Jaeger out to the park several times and each time his reactions have been mixed. The first time he was out, he met a couple with no problems at all and enjoyed his time alone with them in the park. The next time, his reaction to meeting a stranger was surprising (he tried to nip); we believe because the stranger approached him too quickly with sunglasses on. Jaeger ultimately (after only a few seconds) accepted a treat from the stranger and then happily went for a walk with him. The third time, Jaeger was much more comfortable even though the park was very crowded with lots of activities (soccer practice, a child's birthday party with a bounce house and lots of screaming and yelling). He met several people at the park and had no problems with allowing strangers to approach and pet him. However, when a lady went by pushing a stroller, Jaeger reacted very suspiciously and moved to defend his foster mom against the invading stroller. We asked the lady to step back, and we "introduced" Jaeger to the stroller. Once he'd had a chance to investigate, we took the stroller out for a spin and he walked happily beside it.

Jaeger's reaction to things or people he is unfamiliar with can be fear based aggression. Ongoing socialization is a MUST for him. He needs to get out while he is still young and be introduced to strange people, places and things. He's only a puppy and there's a whole big wide world out there that he hasn't seen yet, and it's going to be the job of his new family to introduce him. He is a "project" -- a diamond in the "ruff" if you will -- and it's going to take a very committed (alpha leader) owner to bring Jaeger into his own and to help him become the wonderful dog we know he can be. Training and socialization classes will be a requirement for his adoption. If you have the time, level of commitment and devotion to give, Jaeger would love to meet you.

UPDATE 5/13: Jaeger started training with Leah of Dog House Training Academy today. For his first lesson, Leah took him to PetsMart where he is learning to look to his person for guidance when faced with an unknown person or situation. Leah was very impressed with his behavior, but we cannot stress enough that this is a very immature teenager who needs the guidance of a confident leader to keep him on the right track. Continuing training will be a condition of his adoption.

UPDATE 11/23: We moved Jaeger into a new foster home today to see how well he would do as an only dog. Jaeger and his foster mom, Melissa, will be starting training with Leah after Thanksgiving--we want to give them some time to bond and for Jaeger to settle in. Please check back for progress reports.

UPDATE 12/10: Melissa and Jaeger have been working with Leah for the past few weeks, but we have determined that Melissa is not the right foster for Jaeger, who needs a strong pack leader with German Shepherd saavy. Jaeger (aka "Mikey") will be moving back with one of our staff members immediately to continue the search for his forever home.

UPDATE 12/14: Jaeger has moved back in with our staff member and is doing beautifully. He loves the structure and controlled environment of the pack at his foster home (not to mention the companionship of his doggie friends) and is happy and relaxed. His foster mom has no trouble with him at all.

For those considering Jaeger as an addition to their family, please read over his bio carefully. Jaeger is a reactive teenager. He does not tolerate change or things he does not understand (new people, places and things) and reacts negatively (barking and/or nipping) to them. Jaeger MUST have a confident leader that will walk him through these new situations and encounters. He will not be placed with young children, and would do better with a large, stable female dog as a companion. ONGOING TRAINING AND SOCIALIZATION IS A MUST.
