| Hannah was picked up around Christmastime by the Coronado Island Police Deparment. It was obvious that she'd recently whelped a litter of pups, even though she's barely more than a puppy herself (about 18 months). Apparently there is no shortage of abandoned animals on the Island, but the police department felt she was too good a dog not to go the extra mile to try and find a rescue that would take her. According to the contacting officer, "...we currently have a female Shepherd in the facility that needs help with placement. She is approximately 1.6 years of age and recently had a litter of puppies. We are assuming that she was dumped on the island like many dogs are. Hannah is a friendly girl that needs to find her forever home." Since the California rescues are currently swamped, their plea for help was forwarded to us. We would love to be able to help Hannah, but as always, the problem is going to be getting her to us from San Diego and finding her a place to go once she gets here. UPDATE 1/5: Hannah has run out of time. The police department wants her "transferred out" by the end of the week. We're not sure what "transferred out" means or where she would be going if she were to be "transferred," so 2 of our staff members will be heading to San Diego bright and early Saturday morning to pick up Hannah. The police have been more than helpful in working with us, but since the "animal control" on Coronado Island is basically 5 kennels in the basement of the temporary police station, they don't have a whole lot of flexibility on how long they can hold any particular dog. UPDATE 1/9: Two of our staff members made the round trip to Coronado Island today to bring Hannah home.
UPDATE 1/13: Hannah is settling in well at her temporary foster home. She appears to have had some training as she sits on command and is very responsive when on a leash. We'll be discovering more and more about her as the days pass. UPDATE 1/15: Hannah saw our vet today for her initial examination. The vet found her to be in relatively good health. He agreed with our assessment of 18 months for Hannah's age and stated that she was slightly underweight at 64.5 pounds. We pointed out the coat down the middle of Hannah's back, which feels very course and dry and is discolored in places, and Dr. H said that was very likely attributable to poor nutrition (not to mention just having a litter of puppies to feed) and would resolve itself in time with proper care and good food. Hannah was updated on shots and pronounced healthy. Good girl!
Hannah still needs a foster home. If you would like to offer Hannah your hospitality, please fill out the questionnaire below and email Nancy. UPDATE 1/18: Hannah moved in with foster parents Nancy and Paul in Mesa today. Time will tell if this will be a permanent arrangements. Kitty introductions went well, but we'll need to see if the cats (who have never seen a dog before) will be comfortable living up close and personal with an 18 month old German Shepherd.
UPDATE 1/27: Hannah continues to do well and has settled in beautifully with foster parents Nancy and Paul. If the "cat situation" can be resolved, Hannah will be adopted by her foster family in February. If not, she will be available for adoption following her spay surgery. UPDATE 2/19: Hannah has been scheduled for her spay surgery in April, after which she will either be adopted by her foster family or be available for adoption. Please check back. UPDATE 3/12: ![]() Hannah surveys her domain UPDATE 4/12: Hannah's spay surgery had to be postponed as she came into heat. She will be spayed in early May and then adopted by her foster family. UPDATE 5/4: ![]() Hannah has now been spayed and is resting comfortably at her foster home. It's our guess that Hannah has found her forever home... Adoption fee $325.00.
