|DOOGAL IN A NUTSHELL: Doogal is the sweetest, most gentle dog we have had in rescue in a very long time. It is very apparent that he has been neglected for most of his life ~ he longs to have a family to love and to love him back. He's surprising gentle on a leash -- just a reminding tug on the leash brings him back to your side -- and he's perfectly crate trained (although he has only been crated in the company of other dogs, so we're not sure what he would do by himself). The life is slowly coming back to his eyes and the smile has returned to his face. This boy is going to make one family very lucky.
||We first heard about this handsome (but obviously very neglected boy) from our facebook angel, Kathy J. She had been searching for a video of him and when she finally found one, she sent his picture and the video to us.
Kathy called the shelter and was told, "...no interested parties on him; he needs health waiver due to some hair loss on back and legs, scrapes on nose, scrape thought to be from trying to escape truck, went in play yard basically stayed away from other dogs, kept to himself, no incidents, seemed fine with people upon pickup." Lisa, who has a contact at the shelter, also inquired and was told, "He is a very sweet quiet boy." (From Shannon) "But Doogal is my boy! I named him and i love him! He gives hugs and kisses and is a snuggler. He knows sit, stay, lay down, shake and kiss on command."
The shelter confirmed he was fine in playgroup. No aggression towards other dogs… No aggression to people.
When we asked where his name came from, Kathy J sent us this:
Apparently, Doogal, is a movie. Who knew!? Summary: This is the story of Doogal, an adorable candy-loving mutt who goes on a mission to save the world. Legend tells of three magic diamonds that, if in the wrong hands, can be united to create a force powerful enough to freeze the sun. When the evil sorcerer Zeebad escapes from his ancient prison, he vows to exact revenge by deep-freezing the earth forever. Doogal must prevent the evil sorcerer Zeebad from finding the diamonds and freezing the earth forever. Joining Doogal on his big quest are pals Dylan, a guitar-playing rabbit, Ermintrude, an opera-singing cow, and Brian, a bashful snail. Hopping on a magic train in order to find the diamonds before Zeebad, they travel over ice-capped mountains, navigate fiery pits of lava, sail across vast oceans and pass through a booby-trapped temple guarded by an army of ninja skeleton warriors on the perilous journey of a lifetime. Along the way, they learn that the most powerful weapon of all is their friendship - which even Zeebad's magic cannot destroy!
We gave the immediate GO AHEAD, and Kathy put things into motion. According to Kathy, "Lisa sent Tina (in pic below) to do the pull at Palmdale. She said Doogal is very sweet, and walks really well on leash. The shelter said he is very thin and recommends extra feedings. Lisa also said he had been sick and on meds (I’m assuming URI) because she said she didn’t want him to get pneumonia...."
From Kathy after Doogal's liberation from the shelter, "Hey Everyone, I'm so happy to tell you that handsome Doogal is out and safe. He's such a nice boy, just unbelievable the dogs that are in shelters... He knows commands, he's sweet, and walks great on leash! Such a mild, mannered guy. He WILL be cherished by someone.... THANKS to the combined save of Shepherd's Paw Animal Rescue and White GSD Rescue. Thank you for sharing Doogal and getting him to his new life, special thanks Lisa Korell, Tina Raborn and Tera Terrillo Borden…and Cathleen Hamand Bennett and Joseph Guay for taking special temporary care of Doogal. Just wait until he's groomed, he's going to be super gorgeous, I can't wait to see! AND LOOK at the GOOD LUCK rainbow!!!!
As luck would have it, we have someone driving back to Phoenix from California on February 9th and we have asked him to pick up Doogal on his way home. He will be seeing our vet first thing Monday morning.
UPDATE 2/9: Thanks to Mike and Dianna, Doogal made his way safely to Phoenix this afternoon. According to Mike, "He is doing good; slept most of the way Stopped, got gas. pooped, dran some water, fell asleep again. He is a good boy -- hairy but good."
While he looks lovely in the photos that Mike sent us from the trip, it was very apparent once we laid eyes on him that Doogal is in pretty poor condition -- did his owners not own a brush? It's obvious that this boy has been severely neglected, but he is still as calm and sweet and loving to humans as can be.
UPDATE 2/13: We took Doogie over to Michelle at Sherry's Pampered Pets this morning to see if she could work her magic on his badly neglected coat. We tried, but we couldn't seem to get a bad picture of him!
We're definitely looking forward to taking his "after" pictures.
UPDATE 2/16: Official "Kitty Testing Day" for Doogal.
We got the cats to run and Doogie followed (not chased) them into the livingroom. One cat hid behind a chair, and when Doogie approached, he spit and swatted at him, and Doogie immediately retreated.
Doogie has an appointment with our vet next week for his intake exam. He will be updated on shots, microchipped and scheduled for neuter surgery (if necessary), after which he will be available for adoption. Anyone interested in giving this big teddy bear a forever home to call his own? We'd love to hear from you.
UPDATE 2/19: Doogal saw our vet this afternoon and definitely brought his charm along ~ everyone at the office fell in love with this boy. He weighed in at 72.2 pounds (a gain of just over 2 pounds since being weighed at the shelter on January 31st); he has about 20 more to go. He's definitely headed in the right direction on all fronts. The vet liooked over his skin and could find no active infection or cause for concern; the hair was definitely growing back where there had been hair loss before, but he could not say that the bald spots on his front legs will ever fill in completely. Doc put his age at 2-3 years. He also checked his neuter and found 2 small hematomas where his testicles used to be. We were instructed to continue doing what we were doing and monitor Doogie over the next couple of weeks, after which we will have him rechecked. If all continued to go in a positive directions, Doogal will be available for adoption in about 2 weeks' time. That is not to say we couldn't move him into a foster-to-adopt home before then.
Adoption fee $395.00.
