| Chance was taken in as a stray by his current owner almost a year ago. He's part of a 3-dog pack and more than his Good Samaritan bargained for.
We have not evaluated Chance yet but we do know that he might have some fear issues most of which are likely handler related. Dogs like Chance need a confident leader. He does OK with the small dogs he lives with but has been reactive with strange dogs...we will know more when we see him. Chance is house and leash trained, lives indoors and is current with vaccinations. He will not be placed with children. Please check back for his staff evaluation update EVALUATION: We were expecting a fear aggressive dog that might be wary of strangers, instead, we met a friendly mush pot who simply relies a great deal on the cues from his handler. Chance's folks are kind and generous people who inherently believe that love takes care of it all. Unfortunately, they had never had a German Shepherd Dog before; a breed that requires leadership and confidence from their handler as well as guidance as to when they need to be protected. He never tucked his tail or retreated, he was forthcoming with this stranger and readily accepted petting. He did keep a close eye on Dad..just a little insecurity and not uncommon with these loyal companions. He tolerated corrections and even an inspection of his mouth without protest. Chance knows his basics and is eager to please. He walks well on leash and will easily take to more advanced obedience. Most importantly, Chance needs to be taught if and when his behavior around running kids or strange dogs is inappropriate; he has not been corrected for it thus has no way of knowing it is not permitted. In the right hands, Chance will be someone else's mush pot; that someone, however, should have some training and GSD experience to accommodate Chance's need for leadership. His current parents recognize that Chance needs someone stronger, a little more experienced and who can provide him with more physical activity. They have graciously agreed to start him in a recommended obedience class this week in order to accelerate his progress and get in more socialization as well as to hone their own handling skills. Chance is known to have been at large, fending for himself at a construction site for many months before he found his current home. Needless to say, having been a youngster in survival mode is reason enough for him not to know that he no longer needs to be on the defensive. He has done very well with kids from toddler on up over the holidays, but that was in his home. In public places he wasn't so sure. Once his folks learned to relax and ease up on his lead, Chance had no problem ignoring strange kids and became very relaxed himself. Until he's had more practice at it, we would prefer no children for his forever home. He was also attacked by 3 Pit Bulls at a dog park, hence a little defensive around unfamiliar dogs; he does fine with the two he lives with. Part of Chance's charm are the ears that reach east and west as he cocks his intelligent head wanting so much to know what it is you want. No Cats, would likely do well with proper intros to a confident female. Minor allergies..does not break skin or cause hot spots. He is neutered, on Heartworm preventative, housetrained, has not been crate trained, and will be microchipped. Chance is about two years old and ready to meet you.
Adoption fee $250.00.
